Job Description

We have an immediate opening for a full-time Skipper. As the successful candidate, you will safely operate passengers and other vessels and ensure passengers and goods are onboarded and offboarded safely.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

• Operate company-owned vessels, including passenger ferries, according to schedule; ensure passengers and materials are transported safely and follow all Transport Canada safety requirements.
• Ensure fares are properly collected by Deckhand from passengers and are reported.
• Inspect the vessel prior to operation to ensure equipment is operating satisfactorily in conformance with all regulations and to ensure the efficient and safe operation of the vessel.
• Ensure Captain's license is renewed as required, including updating all licensing requirements such as first aid.
• Oversee the ordering of fuel and other supplies, and ensure invoices are recorded and paid.
• Ensure vessels, dock and office are clean and presentable before and after runs.
• Be on time and be flexible for last-minute schedule changes due to illness, special trips, excursions, and other unforeseen circumstances. Respond to questions and queries from passengers and community members.
• Responsible for ensuring that vessels are secured during all weather conditions to prevent further damage during or after work hours. Practice safety drills, including but not limited to Man overboard, Mock distress radio call, Emergency steering and anchoring, First aid, etc. Attend staff meetings as required.
• Satisfy and maintain Transport Canada safety requirements, including Life Raft, correct equipment, etc.
• Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position, as assigned.

Education, Experience and Knowledge:

• Minimum Grade 12 diploma or equivalent and at least 3 years' experience as a Skipper/Mate/Captain or in a similar role. 
• Master or Mate Limited 150 Gross Tons or more; SVMO Small Vessel Machinery Operator.
• Marine Emergency Duties A2; ROC-MC Radio Certificate; current Marine Medical; Marine Basic First Aid.
• Previous experience with commercial passenger vessels is considered an asset.
• You are energetic and represent the Band professionally and courteously while playing a critical role in vessel operations and safety; you are punctual and regular, with excellent organizational skills. 
• Demonstrated ability to operate within Transport Canada Guidelines.
• Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.; adjust and be flexible to meet changing work needs and demands. 
• Ability to demonstrate a commitment to embodying a personal addiction-free lifestyle.
• The successful candidate will be asked to provide a current Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Screening and a valid driver’s license as a condition of employment.
